About the MV Saint Malo

Named after one of Brittany’s most iconic destinations, the MV Saint Malo represents Brittany Ferries’ vision for sustainable, stylish travel. Launched in February 2025, she is the operator’s first hybrid-LNG ferry – combining liquefied natural gas propulsion with electric battery power, much like a hybrid car, resulting in significantly lower emissions than a conventional vessel. She replaced the much-loved MV Bretagne, which had served the Portsmouth St Malo route since 1989.

Her interior spaces have been designed to bring Brittany to life on board. From the Gwenn-ha-du (black and white) inspired Breizh ma Bro bar to the rich colours of traditional Breton costumes that adorn the fabrics and walls – everywhere you look, the ship reflects the heritage, identity, and personality of modern-day Brittany. The Exhibition Gallery on Deck 6 takes this further, housing around 1,000 artworks including paintings by Scottish artist Alexander Goudie, a miniature replica of the Saint-Alexis statue, and street art by Retro Graphitism on the outer decks.

As the primary year-round vessel on the Portsmouth St Malo route, the MV Saint Malo operates the overnight sailing from Portsmouth (departing ~20:15, arriving St Malo ~08:15). The Armorique covers some early-season sailings – but if you’re booking from April through November, you’ll almost certainly be sailing on the Saint-Malo.

💡 Deck plan tips – choosing your cabin location:

  • Seasickness: Deck 6 midship is the most stable position on board – lower and central means the least movement in rough seas. Avoid Deck 9 if you’re susceptible.
  • Most choice: Deck 6 has the greatest number of cabins and runs the full length of the ship – it’s where you’ll find the widest range of pet-friendly, allergy-friendly, and wheelchair-accessible options.
  • Closest to facilities: Deck 7 puts you steps from Le Littoral restaurant, the duty-free boutique, and La Plage. Deck 8 is closest to the Breizh ma Bro bar, Le Jardin, and the CClub Lounge.
  • Cabin numbers: The first digit of your cabin number tells you which deck you’re on – cabin 624 is Deck 6, cabin 714 is Deck 7, cabin 812 is Deck 8, cabin 921 is Deck 9.
  • Pet exercise area: Accessible from Deck 7 (outdoor, starboard side). On boarding, a crew member will escort you and your pet via the yellow lift from the vehicle deck.
  • You cannot select a specific cabin number online. Call Brittany Ferries after booking at 0330 159 7000, if you have a deck or location preference, they will accommodate where possible, phone lines are open: Monday to Friday 09:00-18:00. Saturday & Sunday 09:00-16:30, subject to availability.

MV Saint Malo Ship Guide – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MV Saint Malo?

The MV Saint-Malo is Brittany Ferries’ newest cruise ferry, launched in February 2025. She is the primary vessel on the overnight Portsmouth to St Malo route and the company’s first hybrid-LNG ship, combining liquefied natural gas propulsion with electric battery power for lower emissions. Built to the Stena E-Flexer design, the 10-deck vessel carries up to 1,310 passengers and 470 cars, with a gross tonnage of 30,000 GT. She offers two restaurants, a premium CClub Lounge, Exhibition Gallery, wellness room, sun deck, and 386 cabins across 6 grades.

Where is the MV Saint-Malo now?

You can track the MV Saint-Malo live using the map above — it shows her exact position, speed and heading in real time via AIS (IMO 9946336 · MMSI 228457700). On a typical evening sailing she departs Portsmouth at around 20:15, crosses overnight, and arrives at St Malo’s Gare Maritime the following morning at approximately 08:15 French local time. The daytime return from St Malo to Portsmouth takes around 7 hours 30 minutes.

Is there a deck plan for the MV Saint Malo?

Yes – the full MV Saint Malo deck plan image is shown above, with a complete deck-by-deck breakdown alongside it. In summary: Decks 1–3 are engineering and crew only; Decks 4–5 are vehicle decks; Deck 6 is the largest passenger deck running the full length of the ship, housing the Information Desk, ATM, Exhibition Gallery, Games Planet, children’s playroom, dog kennels, and the greatest number of passenger cabins; Deck 7 has Le Littoral restaurant, Les Boutiques duty-free shop, the Wellness Room, the outdoor pet exercise area, La Plage, and passenger cabins aft; Deck 8 has Le Jardin restaurant, the Breizh ma Bro bar (central, glass roof), the CClub Lounge (forward port), and passenger cabins aft; Deck 9 has passenger cabins on the aft section only; and Deck 10 is the sun deck with outdoor gym, children’s play area, and sunbathing space – no cabins. Your cabin number’s first digit tells you your deck.

Which deck is best on the MV Saint Malo?

It depends on your priorities. For the least motion in rough seas, choose a midship cabin on Deck 6 – the lowest passenger deck and the most stable position on board. For convenience, Deck 7 puts you closest to Le Littoral restaurant, the duty-free boutique, and the Wellness Room. For the premium experience, Deck 8 has the Breizh ma Bro bar, Le Jardin restaurant, and CClub Lounge (forward port) – Commodore cabins here also include Les 8 Trésors lounge access and a complimentary breakfast. Deck 9 cabins are aft only and at height, so more motion may be felt. Deck 10 is the sun deck (no cabins) – the best spot on the ship to watch the approach into St Malo bay. You cannot choose a specific deck when booking online; call Brittany Ferries after booking to request a preference at 0330 159 7000. Phone lines are open: Monday to Friday 09:00-18:00. Saturday & Sunday 09:00-16:30

Is the MV Saint Malo the same as the old Saint-Malo ferry?

No. The MV Saint Malo is a completely new ship, built in 2024 and entering service in February 2025. She replaced the much-loved MV Bretagne – which served the route since 1989 – and represents a significant step forward in size, passenger facilities, and environmental performance. She is not to be confused with the earlier Brittany Ferries ship of the same name that operated on this route in previous decades.

Does the MV Saint Malo have a cinema?

No. The MV Saint Malo does not have onboard cinemas – those are a feature of the Armorique, which covers some early-season sailings. Entertainment on the Saint-Malo instead centres on the Breizh ma Bro bar (live acts, quizzes, silent discos), the Exhibition Gallery on Deck 6, and the free Video on Demand service available in every cabin and throughout the ship via Wi-Fi.

How long is the crossing on the MV Saint Malo?

The overnight sailing from Portsmouth departs at approximately 20:15 and arrives in St Malo at approximately 08:15 – a crossing of around 10–11 hours. The daytime return sailing from St Malo to Portsmouth takes a similar length of time. A cabin is compulsory on the overnight Portsmouth departure but optional on the daytime return.

What plug sockets does the MV Saint Malo have?

Every cabin on the MV Saint Malo has UK three-pin sockets, European two-pin sockets, and USB-A and USB-C ports – so UK passengers do not need any adaptors. This is a key advantage over the Armorique, which only has continental 2-pin sockets and requires a travel adaptor for UK devices.

How do I know if I’m sailing on the MV Saint Malo or the Armorique?

The ship operating your sailing is confirmed in your booking details. As a general guide: the MV Saint-Malo is the primary vessel and operates the vast majority of sailings year-round. The Armorique typically covers some early-season sailings in February and March. If you want to be certain you are sailing on the Saint-Malo – particularly important if you want a Commodore cabin, Admiral suite, CClub Lounge, or Les 8 Trésors access – check your booking confirmation before finalising.

Is food included in the MV Saint Malo crossing?

On overnight sailings from Portsmouth, your cabin price includes a complimentary 3-course dinner and continental breakfast served in Le Littoral or Le Jardin. On the daytime return sailing from St Malo, no meals are included – but both restaurants, La Plage, and the bars are open throughout the crossing where you can purchase food and drinks. Commodore and Admiral guests also have access to Les 8 Trésors lounge, where a complimentary breakfast is served privately.
