Do I Need a Cabin on the Portsmouth to St Malo Ferry?

On the overnight MV Saint-Malo sailing from Portsmouth, yes, it’s compulsory. The ship has no reserved seats, so every passenger needs a cabin. On the small number of sailings run by Armorique instead (7–20 March in 2027), you can choose between a cabin and a reserved lounge seat from £10.

On the daytime sailing from St Malo back to Portsmouth, a cabin is optional. Most passengers use the lounges, restaurants and decks, but cabins are offered at a reduced rate for daytime crossings if you’d like privacy or somewhere to lie down.

💡 Prone to seasickness? Even on the daytime crossing, a cabin can be worth the extra. Lying down flat is one of the most effective ways to cope with a rough sea, and a lower deck towards the middle of the ship moves the least.

Why Your Cabin Choice Matters

You’ll spend most of an overnight crossing asleep, so the right cabin is less about luxury and more about arriving in France rested and ready to drive.

🛏️

Arrive rested for the drive

Most passengers drive off at St Malo straight into a day on French roads. A proper bed, whether that’s a bunk or a queen-size, makes a real difference to how you feel behind the wheel.

🛁

Ensuite in every cabin

Every cabin on both ships has its own shower and WC, so you can freshen up before breakfast and arrival without queuing.

🔌

A base for the evening

Charge your devices, store your overnight bag and have somewhere quiet after dinner. On the MV Saint-Malo every cabin has UK, European and USB A+C sockets.

👨‍👩‍👧

Easier for families

A 4-berth or 6-berth cabin keeps a normal bedtime routine for children, and it’s priced per cabin, so it often costs less per head than you’d expect.

💡 You don’t have to stay in it

Restaurants, bars and lounges are open to every passenger whatever cabin you book. Use your cabin to sleep, shower and store your bags, and enjoy dinner and the views on the way out of Portsmouth Harbour.

About the Two Ships

The MV Saint-Malo runs the route for almost the whole year. She’s an LNG-electric hybrid cruise ferry that entered service in February 2025. Armorique covers a short period instead (7–20 March in 2027). You can’t choose the ship, because it depends on your sailing date, but your booking confirmation always shows which one you’re on.

🚢 MV Saint-Malo (most of the year)

  • 386 cabins across six grades
  • Admiral suite and Commodore cabins
  • Les 8 Trésors private lounge
  • 6-berth family cabins
  • Pet-friendly, allergy-friendly and wheelchair-accessible cabins
  • UK, European and USB A+C sockets in every cabin
  • No reserved seats, so a cabin is required overnight

🚢 Armorique (7–20 March 2027)

  • Club Plus cabins with breakfast in your cabin
  • 4-berth Club, 2-berth and 4-berth cabins
  • Pet-friendly 2-berth and 4-berth cabins
  • Six wheelchair-accessible cabins
  • Reserved seats from £10
  • Continental sockets only, so bring an adaptor
  • No Admiral, Commodore or Les 8 Trésors

⚠️ Booking Commodore or Admiral? Check your sailing is on the MV Saint-Malo, as neither grade, nor the Les 8 Trésors lounge, is available on Armorique.

Portsmouth to St Malo Ferry Cabin Prices at a Glance

These are from-prices per cabin, not per person, for the overnight Portsmouth to St Malo crossing. What you pay depends on your sailing date, the season and how far ahead you book. Peak summer and Friday and Saturday departures cost more, and booking early gets you the best price and the widest choice of grades.

💰 Best value for families

A 4-berth inside cabin at £64+ works out at £16 per person, and the 6-berth at £92+ at around £15 per person. That’s far cheaper than splitting six people across three 2-berth Club cabins (£237+).

⭐ Is Commodore worth it?

At £108+, a 2-berth Commodore is only £29 more than an inside Club cabin, and it includes breakfast, which is worth around £10 per person. You also get a queen-size bed, a window, Phytomer toiletries and a minibar.

🍳 Club Plus on Armorique

Breakfast for four costs about £40 in the restaurant, so the 4-berth Club Plus (£111+) works out cheaper than a 4-berth Club (£89+) plus breakfast bought separately.

Prices are from-prices for comparison between cabin types. Your actual price depends on your sailing, date and season.

MV Saint-Malo Cabins: The Complete Guide

What changes from grade to grade is the space, the beds, whether you get a window, and the extras: tea and coffee from Club upwards, and Phytomer toiletries, a minibar and Les 8 Trésors lounge access in Commodore and Admiral.

Which Portsmouth to St Malo Ferry Cabin Should You Book?

Honest advice by type of traveller, based on the grades and prices above:

👫 Couples

Best pick: The 2-berth Commodore (from £108) has a queen-size bed, a window and Les 8 Trésors breakfast. It’s only £29 more than the inside Club cabin (from £79), which is the sensible budget choice. For a special trip, the Admiral suite (from £350) is in a class of its own.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families (3–4 people)

Best pick: The 4-berth with a window (from £71) is only £7 more than the inside version (from £64), so it’s worth it for the daylight. For a family of three who want premium, the 3-berth Commodore (from £108) adds a daybed. On Armorique, Club Plus (from £111) includes breakfast in your cabin.

Family Travel Guide

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Groups of 5–6

Best pick: The 6-berth outside cabin (from £92) is the only cabin on the route that sleeps six together. It has a queen-size double, two twin beds and two fold-down beds in 14.3m², with a window. An allergy-friendly version costs the same. Numbers are limited, so book early.

💼 Solo & Budget Travellers

Best pick: On the MV Saint-Malo, the 4-berth inside cabin (from £64) is the cheapest option for most passengers. If you’re sailing 7–20 March on Armorique, a reserved seat (£10) or a 2-berth inside cabin (from £44) is the cheapest way to cross.

🐾 Travelling with Pets

Book at least 3 months ahead for peak season. On the MV Saint-Malo, choose the 4-berth inside (from £83) or outside (from £93) pet-friendly cabin, or the Commodore pet cabin (from £260) for full luxury. On Armorique, the 2-berth inside pet-friendly cabin (from £63) is the cheapest on the route. Pets must stay in a pet-friendly cabin or the kennels.

Pet Travel Guide

🌸 Allergy Sufferers

Best pick: The MV Saint-Malo’s allergy-friendly cabins have vinyl flooring, allergen-sensitive toiletries and fittings. They’re available as a 2-berth outside Club (from £100), a 4-berth inside (from £64) and a 6-berth outside (from £92). The 4-berth and 6-berth versions cost the same as the standard cabins.

♿ Reduced Mobility

Best pick: The MV Saint-Malo has wheelchair-accessible inside (from £44), outside (from £50) and Commodore (from £106) cabins, all 13.2m², plus a pet-friendly Club version (from £118). 🥂 Treating Yourselves

The Admiral suite (from £350) is unique to the MV Saint-Malo. It has 26.6m² of space, a queen-size bed, a lounge area, a 55″ QLED TV and a Sonus Faber speaker, plus a chilled bottle of champagne, Les 8 Trésors access and a table reservation at Le Littoral. With only one grade like it on board, book as early as you can.

👶 Travelling with a Baby

A cot for infants up to 24 months can be pre-booked on both ships. Select that an infant is travelling at the start of booking, and the cot option appears at the accommodation step. It’ll be made up when you board. There’s a maximum of one per cabin, it measures 110cm long with a 60cm mattress, and an undersheet is provided, so bring your own blankets.

Essential Practical Notes

🔑 Your Cabin Key

Your boarding card is your cabin key, with one issued per passenger at check-in. The cabin number is printed on it, and the first digit tells you the deck. If you lose it, the information desk can re-issue one.

⏰ When to Vacate

You need to leave your cabin 30 minutes before arrival. A wake-up call plays in every cabin around an hour before docking. It’s “Dihun – Le Réveil” by Carlos Núñez, so you won’t need an alarm.

🔌 Sockets & Charging

Every MV Saint-Malo cabin has UK, European and USB A+C sockets, so you won’t need an adaptor. Armorique cabins have continental sockets only, so pack a UK-to-EU adaptor. They’re sold on board, but stock is limited.

📶 Wi-Fi & Mobile Data

Wi-Fi covers the whole ship, with around an hour free and paid packages after that. Turn off data roaming before you sail, because your phone can connect to the offshore maritime network, which costs far more than your normal tariff.

🧳 What to Bring

There’s no luggage service, and you can’t access your car during the crossing. Pack a small overnight bag with your nightwear, chargers, medication and travel documents, and leave the rest in the car.

🐕 Pet Rules – Fines Apply

Pets must stay in a pet-friendly cabin or the kennels, and aren’t allowed in interior public areas. Taking a pet into a standard cabin brings a €193.68 cleaning charge (€387.36 for repeat offences). Not muzzling a dog outside the cabin brings a €200 fine (€400 for repeats).

⏳ How Far Ahead to Book

Bookings open up to 12 months ahead. Book Commodore, Admiral, pet-friendly and 6-berth cabins at least 3 months ahead for July and August, and 6–8 weeks ahead in shoulder season.

📆 Cheapest Times to Sail

Midweek sailings (Sunday to Thursday) outside school holidays are the cheapest. Friday and Saturday departures and July–August cost considerably more. The daytime return doesn’t need a cabin, which saves you money on the way home.

📞 Choosing a Specific Cabin

You can’t pick a cabin number or deck online, as it’s assigned automatically within your grade. For special requests, call Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 after booking.

Portsmouth to St Malo Ferry Cabins: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a cabin on the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

On the MV Saint-Malo, yes. A cabin is compulsory on all overnight sailings from Portsmouth to St Malo, and there are no reserved seats, so you can’t travel overnight without one. On the small number of sailings run by Armorique instead (7–20 March in 2027), you need either a cabin or a reserved seat, which costs from £10. On the daytime return from St Malo to Portsmouth, a cabin is optional and offered at a reduced rate.

How much does a cabin cost on the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

On the MV Saint-Malo, cabins start from £64+ for a 4-berth inside cabin. A 4-berth with a window is from £71+, a 2-berth inside Club cabin from £79+, a 6-berth outside cabin from £92+, a Commodore cabin from £108+ and the 26.6m² Admiral suite from £350+. Wheelchair-accessible cabins, for passengers who need them, start from £44+. On Armorique (7–20 March 2027), reserved seats cost £10 and 2-berth inside cabins start from £44+. Prices are per cabin, not per person, so a 4-berth at £64+ works out at £16 per person. Peak season and Friday and Saturday departures cost more.

What is the difference between an inside and outside cabin on the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

Outside cabins have a window and inside cabins don’t. On the MV Saint-Malo, a 4-berth with a window costs around £7 more than the inside version. For an overnight crossing that you’ll mostly sleep through, an inside cabin is perfectly adequate, but a window gives you daylight on the approach into St Malo.

What cabins are on Armorique but not the MV Saint-Malo?

Armorique offers five options the MV Saint-Malo doesn’t: reserved seats from £10, 2-berth inside cabins from £44, 2-berth inside pet-friendly cabins from £63, 4-berth Club cabins with a window and TV from £89, and 4-berth Club Plus cabins with breakfast served in your cabin from £111. Armorique doesn’t have Admiral or Commodore cabins, or the Les 8 Trésors lounge.

What does the Commodore cabin include on the Portsmouth to St Malo route?

On the MV Saint-Malo, Commodore cabins include a window, a queen-size bed or twin beds, premium bed linen and towels, luxury Phytomer toiletries, a soft-drinks minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, and TV with Video on Demand. They also include complimentary access to the Les 8 Trésors lounge, where breakfast is served on overnight sailings, or you can have a continental breakfast served in your cabin. Commodore cabins aren’t available on Armorique.

Can I choose my cabin number or deck on the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

Not when booking online. Your cabin is assigned automatically within the grade you choose. If you have a preference, such as a lower deck for less movement in rough seas, call Brittany Ferries after booking and they may be able to help, subject to availability.

Are towels and bedding provided in Portsmouth to St Malo ferry cabins?

Yes. Every cabin on both ships has bed linen and towels, changed before every departure, plus soap and shower gel. On the MV Saint-Malo, Commodore and Admiral cabins have premium bedding, premium towels and Phytomer toiletries, and other cabins have allergen-free toiletries. Club Plus cabins on Armorique include complimentary toiletries.

Are pets allowed in cabins on the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

Only in pet-friendly cabins or the onboard kennels. The MV Saint-Malo has 28 pet-friendly cabins, including pet-friendly Commodore cabins, and Armorique has 2-berth and 4-berth pet-friendly cabins. Taking a pet into a standard cabin brings a €193.68 cleaning charge, rising to €387.36 for repeat offences. Dogs must be muzzled outside the cabin, with a €200 fine (€400 for repeats) if not. Pet-friendly cabins sell out first, so book at least 3 months ahead for peak season.

Is there Wi-Fi in Portsmouth to St Malo ferry cabins?

Wi-Fi isn’t a cabin feature. It’s provided across the whole ship, with around one hour free and paid packages after that. Admiral passengers get unlimited Wi-Fi for two devices included. Turn off mobile data roaming before boarding, because the offshore maritime network charges far more than standard UK rates.

What plug sockets are in Portsmouth to St Malo ferry cabins?

MV Saint-Malo cabins have UK, European and USB A+C sockets, so UK passengers don’t need an adaptor. Armorique cabins have continental sockets only, so bring a UK-to-EU travel adaptor. They can be bought on board, but stock is limited.

What time do I need to check in for the Portsmouth to St Malo ferry?

Check-in at Portsmouth opens around 2 hours before departure and closes at least 45 minutes before sailing, or 90 minutes before if you’re travelling with a pet. The ferry leaves at around 20:15, so most passengers aim to arrive at the port by 18:30–19:00.
